Playa de Cobijero is a hidden gem that offers a different coastal experience along the Camino del Norte trail.

The Tranquil Beauty of Playa de Cobijero

Playa de Cobijero is a peaceful and secluded beach characterised by its rocky terrain and rugged beauty. It’s a place where the crashing waves meet the rocky shoreline, creating an atmosphere of raw, untamed nature.

The name “Cobijero” refers to a rock formation that provides natural shelter or “cobijo” from the elements, making it an ideal spot for contemplation and relaxation. 

The beach’s untouched beauty and tranquillity make it an oasis for pilgrims seeking solitude.

Visiting Playa de Cobijero

To reach Playa de Cobijero, pilgrims can take a detour from the Camino del Norte. The trail may involve some uneven terrain, so sturdy footwear is recommended. 

As with the other hidden beaches, it’s wise to carry essentials such as water, sunscreen and a sense of wonder to fully appreciate the unique landscape.

The beach is only 30 metres in length and is semi circular and is not possible to see the sea from the beach since it is blocked off by the cliff face. 

The sea comes into the beach via a series of cracks in the cliff wall. It is of course, ideal for bathing, due to its extraordinarily quiet waters.

Playa de Buelna is a hidden paradise located near the small village of Buelna.

Its reached by a narrow local track and rarely busy. It’s my favourite little hidden beach on the Camino del Norte.

Our journey continues with Playa de Xago, a hidden gem nestled along the Camino del Norte. Located just a short detour from the pilgrimage route, this beach is a true coastal paradise.

Playa de Xago's Location and Charm

Playa de Xago boasts a remarkable setting. It is framed by dramatic cliffs that seem to touch the sky, creating a sense of seclusion and wonder. 

Golden sands stretch out beneath the cliffs, meeting the crystal-clear waters of the Cantabrian Sea on this amazing 2km long stretch of beach.

The unique charm of Playa de Xago lies in its natural beauty and tranquility. Unlike some of the more popular beaches, this one offers pilgrims a peaceful escape, a chance to connect with nature, and a respite from the crowds.

As with many places along the Camino, Playa de Xago is not without its legends. Local folklore speaks of mermaids that are said to dwell in the hidden coves and sea caves nearby. 

While spotting a mermaid might be a rare occurrence, the sense of magic and mystery that surrounds the beach is ever-present.

The beach is framed by rolling hills covered in vibrant green vegetation, creating a stunning backdrop against the blue waters of the Cantabrian Sea.

Playa de Ballotta

Playa de La Espasa

If you are walking the Camino del Norte you on the cliff walk section you will come across Playa de la Espasa. 

Its a wide expanse of sand with only a few people on it and perfect for a day on the beach in peace.

The beach actually has a fantastic little cafe/bar on it which is well worth visiting.

El Visa Beach Bar

We we’re in need of a really good coffee and some food and the El Visa beach bar was a blessing and the food was really good. 

It’s right on the beach and if you are there on an evening it looks a really lively place to have a been and chill.

Playa de la Isla

At the far end of the bay we come across yet another hidden treasure, Playa de la Isla Beach. 

This coastal gem promises pilgrims and travelers a serene and picturesque escape. There is even an Albergue right on the beach.

A Hidden Paradise Near Colunga

Playa de la Isla Beach is a secluded paradise situated near the town of Colunga. Its unspoiled beauty and tranquil ambiance make it an ideal stop for those seeking a peaceful retreat amid their pilgrimage.

This hidden beach on the Camino del Norte is characterised by its soft, golden sands that seem to stretch endlessly along the coastline. 

Hotel Bahia

The Hotel Bahia is set on the beachfront in La Isla and features a terrace with sea views and an on-site bar.

It offers free WiFi, sea views and a TV in all rooms and you can step out of the hotel directly onto the beach. An amazing experience.

Playa de Torimbia is another hidden treasure along the Camino del Norte that promises pilgrims and travelers a unique coastal experience.

These 8 beaches are fantastic and secluded with some taking a bit of finding but oh so worth the visit.
