Azofra
Some are amazing and some a bit basic.
I’ve walked this stretch of the Camino Frances many times from St Jean Pied du Port and have always stopped in this little village as it’s been so welcoming.
The municipal albergue even has a small plunge pool here for chilling out in the afternoons with a cold beer !
Here’s some helpful advice for selecting the best Bergingen in Azofra so you can make the most of your time on The Camino Frances and this fantastic small village.
Azofra is a small town in the province of La Rioja, located on the Camino Francés, one of the most popular pilgrimage routes of the Camino de Santiago. There are only about 400 inhabitants living in the village full time.
The town of Azofra has a rich history that spans over two millennia. It was founded by the Romans and was known as “Ausebro” during their rule and was an important stop along the route to Burgos.
The town’s location along the River Tuerto made it an important trading post, and it continued to be a strategic location throughout the Middle Ages.
What to do in Azofra
Azofra is a small village that is located in a rural area of northern Spain, and as such, it offers a small range of activities that are centered around village, its history and the local culture.
Here are some of things you can do when stopping here:
Azofra’s most famous landmark is the church of Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Los Angeles or The Church of our Lady of the Angels.
The church is located in the heart of the town and is a popular place of pilgrimage for those walking the Camino.
Explore the Village: Azofra is a small village on the Camino de Santiago but it is worth taking some time to explore the local streets and stone houses as well as the ancient church in the centre of the village.
Wine tasting: Azofra is in the Rioja region so take some time out to have a good bottle of wine and enjoy relaxing with other Pilgrims.
Gastronomy: The local cuisine of Azofra is based on traditional recipes and ingredients and there are restaurants in the village that offer delicious regional dishes.
People watching: Sometimes its just great to watch Pilgrims as they walk through the village. You will nearly always see someone you have talked to before.
Azofra is a peaceful, welcoming village and a great place for pilgrims to rest and recharge before continuing their journey. I love it here.
Where to eat in Azofra
The region of La Rioja is famous for its wine, and Azofra is no exception. The town is located in the heart of the Rioja wine region and is surrounded by vineyards and wineries.
In addition to wine, the region is known for its traditional cuisine, which includes dishes like grilled lamb chops, stewed vegetables, and sautéed mushrooms.
There are only 2 restaurants in the village. On my recent walk along the Camino Frances I ate at Bar Sevilla and had a Pilgrim meal. 3 courses with bread and wine for €12 per person (menu below)
There is also another Pilgrim Restaurant called Bar Restaurant el Descanso del Peregrino that has good food and some tables outside as well.
It is directly on the Main Street through the village.
A short drive away there are also a couple of restaurants if you get a taxi to take you there. these are Caribe (6 min drive) and Bar Naxara (7 min drive)
